Six fishermen were rescued last night (Thursday) from a fishing boat that became stranded on Praia do Tonel, in Sagres.
The Portuguese ‘Avô Rita’ boat was apparently travelling too close to the shore and became lodged on a sandbank.
As the tide was going down, the boat became stranded.
Maritime authorities were alerted at 11.15pm. The fishermen were rescued by land “uninjured”, though they showed “signs of hypothermia”. They were treated at the scene by the local firefighters and did not require hospital assistance.
By 00.40am, the rescue operation was over. But as we wrote this article, the boat was still stuck on the sands. A sea rescue company is waiting for the tide to rise to tow it to safety. The vessel is not thought to have suffered major damage.
