Six fishermen were rescued under “severe weather conditions” on Monday (April 4) after their boat crashed into rocks near Arrifana beach, Aljezur.
The crew members had to be airlifted by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter as the sea was too rough to attempt rescue by boat, Lagos port’s commander Carvalho Pinto told Lusa news agency.
Due to the harsh weather, the fishermen were taken back to the Air Force’s base in Montijo.
None of them were reported to be injured.
Meanwhile, their ‘Avô Melro’ boat is still stranded by the rocks.
“It doesn’t have any visible structural damage, at least from where we can see, but the weather conditions are still very adverse,” Carvalho Pinto explained.
He added that the owner of the boat has to present a “rescue plan” before the vessel can be removed.
According to Lusa, the ‘Avô Melro’ was registered in Peniche and used predominantly in the Costa Vicentina area.
