Six arrested in major police swoop on “problematic Lisbon neighbourhood”

With a manhunt still underway for four men involved in a shootout earlier this week that injured three police agents and two civilians, 150 law enforcement officers have returned to the “problematic” neighbourhood of Ameixoeira, in Lisbon, equipped with 13 search warrants.

The operation was still underway as we wrote this article.

Ionline reported that five people have already been arrested and two guns confiscated, while Lusa claims six people have been detained.

The operation – carried out in the interests of crime prevention – began at 7am this (Friday) morning and is “related” to the gunfight that saw residents diving for cover on Tuesday evening as two sides of a warring family faced each other on the street.

Three agents called to the scene were shot (click here), two of them receiving head wounds.

Three people – two women and one of the policemen – are still being treated in hospital.

The four men believed to be behind the incident made off in a VW Golf and remain at large.

PSP spokesman Hugo Palma has told Lusa that the “special criminal prevention operation” has been coordinated with the Public Ministry” and is focused on “situations of violent and organised crime, especially that which involves the use of guns”.
