LEGENDARY FOOTBALL manager, Sir Bobby Robson, will be returning to the Algarve this summer, to lend his support to The Mackenzie Sir Bobby Robson Golf Classic 2007, in aid of Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, the children’s home in Faro.
Now in its fourth year, the tournament will be held at Vila Sol Spa and Golf Resort, in Vilamoura, on June 2.
There will be 30 teams, composed of celebrities from the international sporting scene, friends of Sir Bobby Robson and the general public.
The entire event will be covered by Sky Sports and a total of 28 sporting celebrities have already confirmed that they will be playing golf in the charity tournament.
Francis Lee, Peter Schmeichel, Barry Hearn, Peter Shilton, George Cohen, Ray Clemence, Terry Neil, Warren Barton and, of course, Sir Bobby Robson are just some of the confirmed celebrities.
In a switch from last year’s format, there will be a qualifying match on May 30. In this competition, the top six players will go forward to join two of the celebrities, to become the two Mackenzie teams on June 2.
The Mackenzie Sir Bobby Robson Golf Classic has raised a great deal of money, during the past four years for Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, and this year will be no exception.
The home has been in existence since 1933 and has offered a home to hundreds of children over the years. Sir Bobby Robson has been a great supporter and fundraiser of the home for many years and the director of the home, Luís Villas-Boas, is due to attend the event as a special guest.
Much like previous years, the golf will be followed by a gala dinner, which in the past has been followed by an auction, with all proceeds going to Refúgio Aboim Ascensão. Football memorabilia and other items have proved extremely popular, with people bidding furiously to own coveted items and raising much needed funds for the children’s orphanage.
If you are interested in participating in, or sponsoring, the event, please contact Sean Corte-Real at Vila Sol Spa and Golf Resort on 289 300 505.
