“Every child has a right to be loved” – tournament has raised over €1.3 million for Faro-based Refúgio Aboim Ascensão
For nearly 20 years, The Sir Bobby Robson Celebrity Golf Tournament has been bringing celebrities together to celebrate the life of former England football manager, Sir Bobby Robson, and raise funds for Refúgio Aboim Ascensão.
Sir Bobby Robson lived in Portugal for three years, when he managed Lisbon and Porto. He loved it here and always wanted to repay the kindness the Portuguese people had shown towards him and his wife, Lady Elsie. Supporting the Faro-based Refúgio Aboim Ascensão has been the chance to do that.
The staff at the Refúgio look after up to a hundred local children who have been abandoned and, in some cases, abused. Their philosophy is simple yet compelling: “Every child has a right to be loved.”
Saturday’s tournament (June 24) will be held at the Pestana Vila Sol Championship Course in Vilamoura. Amateur and celebrity golfers will be competing during the day and, in the evening, there will be a charity auction.
This year’s theme is “Bobby ‘90”. Mark Robson, Sir Bobby’s son and event organiser, explained: “This year would have been my dad’s 90th birthday so, as a celebration of his life, the ‘90 theme seemed appropriate. It’s also a reference to the fabulous Italia 90 World Cup, when my dad led the England team to the semi-finals.”
It’s free to watch the golf, so do go along and, if possible, make a donation.
