Sinn Féin “legend” suffers fatal heart attack on holiday in Portugal

Bridie McMahon, a 64-year-old Sinn Féin “legend”, has died on holiday in Portugal, Irish newspapers have announced. A former republican political prisoner in Armagh jail in the early 1970s, McMahon’s death prompted a poignant announcement from Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams who said she would be “hugely missed” by her West Belfast community. Mrs McMahon’s body is due to be flown home to Ireland by the end of the week.

She is understood to have suffered a sudden heart attack while on holiday with family and friends.
