Silves prepares to go back to Middle Ages

Medieval shows, live music and delicious food promised

It’s almost time for the long-awaited return of Silves Medieval Fair, the town’s biggest summer event.

Due to take place between August 10 and 20, the event will allow visitors to experience “A Day In History” – in other words, what life was like when Silves and the Algarve were ruled by the Moors.

The town will be decorated to look (almost) like it did in the Middle Ages while over 100 exhibitors from all over the world will set up shop along its streets.

There will be the usual Medieval tournaments and shows, live music performances, street entertainment, Medieval taverns serving food and drinks, a play area for children (Xilb dos Pequenos) and a Berbers camp with blacksmiths, carpenters, potters and vendors selling all sorts of exotic products.

For those looking to immerse themselves completely, there will be two areas where visitors can dress up for the event.

“These will be 11 days that you will not want to miss in a unique environment,” the local council says.

Ticket prices are due to be announced soon, it adds.

Silves Medieval Fair did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, although Silves Medieval (a “more restrained” version of the event) was held last summer.
