Silves’ orange show, which was due to take place this month, has been “postponed indefinitely” due to the Covid-19 pandemic and state of emergency restrictions, the local council has confirmed.
The annual ‘Mostra Silves Capital da Laranja’ is an event that showcases the town’s famous oranges, bringing together local producers, craftspeople and restaurants to highlight the popular fruit.
“Faced with the current sanitary context, it won’t be possible to hold the 5th Mostra Silves Capital da Laranja on its usual date,” said Silves Mayor Rosa Palma.
The decision to postpone, instead of cancelling, the event was made in hopes that “a return to normal” will become a reality soon, the mayor added.
The council highlights that the orange show attracts thousands of people to Silves every year, providing a boost to the local economy.
“This great event relies on the valuable participation of local orange producers, farmers, craftspeople, store and restaurant owners, which is why we are putting it on hold, as it is for them and with them that we organise the ‘Mostra’,” Rosa Palma concluded.
