Silves all at sea

Minnows FC Silves, who play in the Algarve Region Championship, had battled through three rounds of the Portugal Cup with victories against SC Olhanense, Paredes and GD Chaves ‘B’.

For the first time in their history, they reached the fourth round where they travelled to Primeira Liga sixth place Rio Ave.

Silves were two goals down within 10 minutes and 4-0 down at half-time through João Schmidt (2), Gelson Dala and Diego Lopes. Vinicius added a fifth 13 minutes from time as Rio Ave ran riot.

The visitors lost Gerso to a straight red card four minutes later, before Vinicius made it six and an own goal from Lucio made the final score 7-0.

A great effort by the last remaining Algarve team in the Cup who will now concentrate on endeavouring to gain promotion to the Campeonato de Portugal.
