“Significant reduction in horizontal visibility” in Azores as ash cloud from La Palma volcano arrives

Particles emitted by the Cumbre Vieja volcano in eruption on the island of La Palma in the Canaries have arrived at the archipelago of the Azores, provoking a “significant reduction in horizontal visibility”. According to weather entity IPMA, the liquid particles carried by the wind are a result of the reaction between sulphur dioxide and water, and “possess optical properties that contribute to greater light dispersion and consequent reduction in visibility”. The ‘fog’ that has settled over the archipelago is expected to remain in place for some days.
