It is 1954 and US Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) have been assigned to investigate the escape of a dangerous patient from the federal maximum security hospital/prison for the criminally insane, located on the isolated Shutter Island.
Once the Marshalls arrive on the island, they quickly find that the hospital and prison staff are not helping with the investigation and appear to be hiding something from them. Intrigued, Teddy delves into the mystery of Shutter Island trying to uncover the dark secret.

Teddy pushed to be assigned the case for personal reasons but, before long, he is wondering if the doctors on the island have brought him there for some other reason as he witnesses unethical and sinister treatments taking place.
Meanwhile, as Teddy gets closer to revealing the truth about the strange goings on, the island is hit by a hurricane and more of the dangerous patients escape and need to be captured leaving Teddy and Chuck able to investigate areas they were previously denied access to.
As the Marshalls find themselves closer to the truth, Teddy realises that things are often not what they first appear to be as he begins to question his own memory, his partner and even his sanity in this dark Scorsese thriller.
