Ricardo Costa, the 39-year-old man who shot his wife five times with a shotgun, killing her outright in front of horrified customers in a Faro restaurant last year, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.
The man was found guilty of “premeditated homicide” aggravated by the use of a firearm, according to national tabloid Correio da Manhã.
Costa and his wife, 31-year-old Ângela Faria, had been separated for two years but never got an official divorce, says CM.
The tabloid paper adds that the man “was never able to get over the fact that his wife was in a new relationship”.
His frustration is said to have led to the horrific crime on May 28, 2015, when Costa shot her after she refused to speak to him.
The man had travelled over 600 kilometres from Matosinhos to the ‘A Alentejana’ restaurant in Faro, where she worked, with a shotgun and several rounds in his car trunk.
Costa fired at her five times inside the restaurant, shouting things like “I might go to jail, but I’ll be back to finish the job”, CM adds.
PSP police arrived at the scene a few minutes later and arrested Costa, who did not put up resistance.
Faria was taken to Faro Hospital but did not recover from the gunshots.
