THE WEATHER may still be blowing hot and cold here, but if you can’t wait to spend a week or two lazing on a beach, this time of year is an excellent time for a short-haul trip to warmer climes. And, as long as you can avoid the two May bank holidays and the half-term week later in the month, you will find good-value airfares, competitive rates at hotels and some excellent deals on villas and self-catering accommodation.

For guaranteed hot weather, the nearest safe bets are in North Africa – Egypt, where May temperatures already approach summer heat levels (the average daily maximum in Luxor in May is 39C), Tunisia (25C), and Morocco (29C in Marrakesh). Alternatively, the Turkish coast, Cyprus and the Greek islands are great places to visit in May. The average temperature in Cyprus should be close to 29C, with 11 hours of sunshine a day. Bodrum will have warmed up to 26C, while Crete and Corfu register a very pleasant 23C and an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day. In the rest of Europe, Malta (23C), Malaga (23C) and Majorca (22C) are also great destinations at this time of year.
