Shopkeepers vow to pay for Christmas lights

Shopkeepers in downtown Faro, where the local authority has decided to cut Christmas street illuminations to save money, have vowed to dig into their own pockets to encourage business and bring some festive cheer.

Shop owners are taking the initiative by buying their own decorative lights to attract Christmas shoppers and avoid what they predicted could be a “catastrophic” period in terms of visitors and sales.

Luís Barão, President of the Associacão de Comerciantes da Baixa de Faro, said: “The historic centre has always been the visiting card of the city but without Christmas illuminations nobody will feel attracted to shop here.”

This view is supported by João Rosado, of the Algarve Retailers Association (ACRAL), who deplores the fact that the street lighting has been seen by the local authority not as a municipal investment but as an expense for the shop owners and street traders.
