A uncharacteristic shootout ensued after four hooded men raided a BP service station in Estarreja (Aveiro district) on Saturday night. The shots began after police alerted to the assault arrived. It is unclear who shot first. Yesterday’s reports suggest police shot in the air in a bid to get the men to give themselves up. In the confusion, a parked car was damaged. No one was hurt – and the thieves appear to have escaped the scene on foot. PJ police are now ‘investigating’ as the service station employee is ‘being accompanied by a psychologist’.
