Shock as woman filmed covered in ants at Algarve nursing home

Elderly woman filmed covered in ants

Truly shocking footage was posted on social media yesterday showing an elderly woman tied to a bed with an open wound on her hip and covered in ants at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia nursing home in Boliqueime (Loulé).

The video, which according to SIC was filmed at the start of the summer, shows the trail of ants leading from the woman’s body all the way out of the room into the nursing home’s hall.

Adds SIC, the woman’s son claims to have filed several complaints which went unanswered.

The television station also says the woman entered the nursing home’s care in April in a “very debilitated” state after having been hospitalised, having died at the end of July.

A complaint was also filed with Portugal’s Social Security, which carried out an inspection at the nursing home and reportedly failed to find any issues which warranted any kind of action.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has also launched an inquiry which is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Boliqueime has released the following statement:

“The Administrative Board of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Boliqueime, having learned about a video posted on social media which shows a serious (case) of negligence in the treatment and care of a person allegedly in the care of our institution, clarifies that, having learned last week that one or some of its worker(s) did not provide adequate care to the woman, which as everyone knows is their first and most essential duty, decided to carry out an inquiry of disciplinary nature to discover who was responsible for this situation, and will be relentless (always  following the law and the rights of those involved) in their punishment.

The institution also revealed that it has lodged a criminal complaint against the person who posted the video, claiming that “unfounded accusations and insults” were made.

It also said it will use all the legal means at its disposal to “restore the image and reputation of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Boliqueime which is proud of the way it receives and cares for its elderly.”
