Chinese artist to attend opening on his first visit to Portugal
An inspirational new fine art exhibition opening at ArtCatto in Loulé on October 4 is a celebration of the remarkable works of China’s Shen Ming Cun, described as “a rare talent”.
It is for his passion for ancient traditions that this internationally-respected artist, proud Professor of European Art at the university where he studied, is widely recognised; he is attributed with creating awareness of the effects of the modern world on the ancient way of life.
Focused on the tribes of Miao and Yao and the Dong minority of the remote GuangXi region, from where the young people are migrating to the big cities, Shen Ming’s work is a study of the traditional style of dress – unique to each village – where clothes and jewellery are hand sewn and crafted by the local girls. The colours are subtle but dazzle, the detail is intricate and elaborate, the shy smiles of the subjects enchanting.
Unsurprisingly, his exquisite paintings, a captivating expression of life as it was, and people as they are, are housed in important collections – in Beijing, at the Chinese Masterpiece show in Hong Kong, numerous art museums, and several major galleries in the UK.
Shen Ming has worked on many major commissions for the Chinese government, including one for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party; the vast oil painting, Battle of XianGjiang River, measures 280x420cm and is on display at the Guangxi Museum of Fine Arts.
ArtCatto will be exhibiting 11 Shen Ming Cun paintings that are new to the gallery. The artist himself will be attending the opening on his first visit to Portugal.
ArtCatto can be found at Avenida José da Costa Mealha 43 in Loulé
