A hammerhead shark about three metres long was spotted off the coast near Quarteira by crew of a Portuguese Navy vessel on August 30.
According to the authorities, the animal was sighted approximately eight kilometres from the coast.
Other sightings of hammerhead sharks reported in August were at Praia do Zavial and Praia das Furnas, both on the west coast, and off Fuzeta island in Olhão (see Algarve Resident August 26 edition).
