A 47-year-old man swimming off the Muriwai Beach in Auckland, New Zealand, died after an attack by a four-metre long shark.
Police and surf life-savers went out in two rescue boats and fired at the shark which rolled over and disappeared.
According to eye witnesses, the man was still alive after the first attack but was pulled back under the water in a second attack. It is believed a second shark was involved in the fatal attack.
Clinton Duffy, a shark expert, told the Associated Press agency that, unlike Australia, such attacks are rare in New Zealand where only 11 have been recorded since 1847.
In the cooler climate of New Zealand sharks ignore people 99% of the time, he said.
