HUNDREDS OF immigrants gathered at Lisbon’s Memorial to Tolerance on Saturday to protest against allegedly abusive new European Union rules over the expulsion of illegal immigrants.
The rules, enshrined in the so-called ‘Return Directive’, have been approved by the majority of European Union member states and were due to be put to the vote in the European Parliament on Wednesday (June 18).
To the chants of “shameful directive”, from mostly Brazilians immigrants, Gustavo Behr, President of Casa de Brazil, said that under the new rules an illegal immigrant could be “detained for up to 18 months and then be deported.”
