Sexually transmitted diseases are showing a marked increase – with syphilis among the male population being the ‘worst’ in terms of cases. According to data from the ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control), 2019 saw 419 cases of syphilis, when four years before there had been only 43. Chlamydia too is on the increase, most notably in the female heterosexual population. The ECDC data is only working on the five year period between the start of 2015 and end of 2019. The inference being, the situation today will be even worse.
