The maturation of the cerebellum (a region of the brain) in the period after birth is affected by severe allergies, research led by the University of Coimbra (UC) reveals today. Although the relationship between severe allergies and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is already known, it was not known what linked them. The research has provided new information to understand this link which, according to the UC, “is related to a very important interval in the development of the cerebellum in the period after birth, in which the allergic response has been shown to disrupt the maturation of this region of the brain”.
