A 71-year-old German man was seriously injured on Saturday afternoon as he attempted to land his paraglider on Cordoama beach, on the west coast near Vila do Bispo.
Initial reports suggest “the strong wind that was blowing at the time” could have been the cause of the accident.
The man is understood to have ‘hit a cliff, falling then onto Cordoama beach’ – a well-known spot for paragliders.
The accident happened shortly before 3.30pm.
The injured man is described as having remained conscious “despite his injuries”, which are understood to have included a suspected leg fracture.
The man was treated at the scene by INEM, backed by volunteer firefighters, maritime police and local GNR. He was then driven by ambulance to Portimão hospital.
