Seven-year-old girl dies as train ploughs into car in Torres Vedras

A seven-year-old girl has died today after a horrific accident on a level crossing in Torres Vedras.

The child was in a car driven by her grandfather. According to reports, the grandfather did not notice the barrier was down and drove straight onto the crossing in the path of the oncoming train.

The train ploughed into the back of the car, hitting the area where the girl was seated full on.

Jornal de Notícias reports that the child was rushed to hospital, but died before she got there.

The grandfather meantime has been treated for injuries to his chest, and was being given psychological support, along with his wife, who was seated next to him in the passenger seat and suffered minor head injuries.

The accident happened mid-morning today at Torres Vedras Dois Portos crossing. GNR police are investigating.
