Seven people were injured – four of them seriously – in what appears to have been a head-on crash on the EN125 road yesterday (March 7) between Mexilhoeira Grande and Figueira in Portimão.
The crash happened at around 5.45pm and forced authorities to cut traffic on the busy road for two hours.
Eight people were involved – all of them Portuguese and aged between 31 and 76.
Only one was unharmed, while the other seven were taken to Portimão Hospital.
GNR police are investigating to establish whether it was in fact a head-on crash.
This was the latest accident on a road that has claimed many lives in the past few years and which many – such as anti-toll group CUVI – believe would be “safer” and less crowded if tolls were removed from the only alternative, the A22 motorway.
