Seven districts in mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning over New Year’s Eve due to the forecast of sea turbulence, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) said today. The warnings are for the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon. According to IPMA, the yellow warning will begin at 6am on Sunday and remain in force until 3am on Monday, the first day of the New Year. Diving into the sea is a way of celebrating the beginning of each year for many Portuguese, which is why this warning is being sounded well in advance. As for other conditions, New Year’s Eve should be rain-free, with rain returning to regions in the north and centre during the first few days of 2024.
