An innovative project that aims to tackle isolation among older people and give them the chance to have an active role in their community is being launched this month in Alcoutim.
Entitled ‘Universidade Sénior’ (Senior University), the initiative’s goal is to bring social networking and self-confidence to older people by giving them the opportunity to teach classes in their areas of expertise.
Residents over 50 willing to take part in the project are being asked to come forth.
Subjects to be taught include English, Computer Technologies (TIC), ‘Portuguese for Life’, Theatre, and Wellbeing, Health and Security.
The classes will be held from Monday to Friday at Alcoutim’s Centro de Artes e Ofícios and at Martim Longo’s Prof. Joaquim Moreira school.
Other courses are also expected be held throughout the municipality, such as decorative arts in Pereiro, local handicraft in Vaqueiros, macramé in Barrada, sowing in Laranjeiras and embroidery in Santa Justa.
The project is organised by Alcoutim council in partnership with the Alcoutim School Group, Associação Alcance and Escola Profissional ALSUD in Mértola.
Anyone can sign up for the classes, which are free and are expected to begin this month.
