The “higher than normal seismic activity” on São Jorge island in the Azores is showing no signs of calming. Authorities admit a volcanic eruption could follow. Preventative measures are underway; the president of the regional government has cancelled his official trip to Brazil, and volcanologist Rui Marques has explained the volcanic system on this long, thin island “is similar to that of the island of La Palma, in the Canaries”.
