Second “Students Prize Algarve” holds first art exhibition

The first art exhibition of this year’s “Students Prize Algarve” is opening on February 2, at the Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude (IPDJ) in Faro at 4pm.

An initiative by the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), the competition is organised in Portugal by Lagoa-based Sovereign Consultoria Lda and follows the format of similar successful events already held by SAF in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Europe.

Nigel Anteney-Hoare, managing director of Sovereign Consultoria Lda, said: “The main purpose of the prize is to inspire, encourage and reward young artists in the community, to encourage cultural development and raise funds for disadvantaged children in the region.”

All Algarve secondary schools were invited to submit five pupils’ artworks. From these, the judges selected 20 final artworks, which will now be exhibited to the public at various locations in the Algarve and the winners of the competition will be announced at a final event on April 28.

The first two winners are chosen by the judges and third prize is awarded to the artwork which has been voted by the public, both online and directly during the public exhibitions. Vote for your favourite at www.sovereignartfoundation.com (search for “Algarve Students Prize”). The winners’ schools will also receive a prize from the total prize money of €4,550.

Following the judging, all 20 artworks will be auctioned to the public with the proceeds being divided between the artists and a local charity which this year is “School Art Projects”, art and poetry workshops organised by local artists, David Trubshaw and Gudrun Bartels, with the support of Silves Rotary Club. Together they run workshops for children and students of all ages in the Algarve.

They will be producing a hardback book to showcase the children’s work as well as the 20 finalists from the Students Prize competition.

The book is titled “Art and Poetry – A selection of artwork and poetry by students from Algarve Junior and Secondary Schools”.

Proceeds from the book sales will go towards the construction of a sensory room at Casa do Povo in Messines, and Sovereign will be adding funds raised from the auction to support this cause.

The Casa do Povo has been providing for the community since 1934 and aims to meet the educational, social, sporting, cultural and leisure needs of the local population.
