THE FIRST ever ‘search and rescue’ dog training school has opened in Milagres, Leiria (half way between Lisbon and Porto). The dogs will be trained in specialist rescue skills, in order to be part of civil protection teams throughout Portugal.
The special training school has been designed for the project by the Dom Cavalo Equestrian Centre in Alcaidaria, Milagres. The school contains different types of obstacle courses, aimed at improving the dog’s agility and more specific techniques involved in search and rescue activities.
Once the dog has completed the training, it will be attached to a civil protection team, such as the Bombeiros. The training school is an initiative of the Leiria Canine Rescue Unit, which has invested 25,000 euros in setting up the school.
