Olhão will be heaven on earth for seafood lovers this August. The town is currently getting ready to host the 29th edition of its popular Festival do Marisco, one of the Algarve’s biggest and best attended gastronomic events of the summer season.
Taking place between August 9-14, the festival features a mouthwatering range of seafood and shellfish.
Some of the hot favourites include Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice), Açorda de Marisco (seafood bread stew) and the tradional Algarve Cataplanas (seafood cooked in a special copper pan).
The festival also features a top line-up of Portuguese musical acts, such as rock kings Xutos e Pontapés, singer-songwriter Pedro Abrunhosa and popular Angolan singer Anselmo Ralph.
Regional sweets, handicrafts and other produce will also be on sale.
Entry to the event that attracts thousands of people every year costs €9 between August 9-13 and €12 on August 14 due to the much-loved performance of Anselmo Ralph. Children between the ages of seven and 12 pay €4, while children under the age of six can enjoy the whole experience free of charge.
Ticket booths are open during the festival’s six days – opening every day at 6.30pm. They can also be purchased through Ticketline.
Doors open otherwise at 7.30pm, closing five and a half hours later at 1am.
