Olhão’s 28th seafood festival ‘Festival do Marisco’ was considered an outstanding success by its organisers who declared that it achieved the goals it had previously set for the event – six days of entertainment and good food in a fabulous setting.
More than 50,000 people visited the festival between August 10 and 15 at the Jardim Pescador Olhanense, which had mussels as the star attraction of the show this year. The shellfish are caught just along the Olhão coast and the city is looking to promote this local delicacy in an attempt to stimulate its local economy and gastronomy.
Other delicious traditional dishes were available, such as xarém, a type of porridge made with local ingredients, razor clam rice, made with the typical ‘lingueirão’ shellfish or paella made with the local mussels.
But the festival is not complete without its diverse musical offerings, which ranged from Portuguese rock stars Xutos e Pontapés to the beloved Portuguese singer Tony Carreira, who attracted the most visitors when he performed, and from U2 tribute band U2UK to Brazilian samba group Revelação.
