PORTUGUESE SCULPTOR Soares Branco has accused Lisbon Câmara of not paying him 200,000 euros for a piece of work it commissioned from the artist.
The work in question is a bronze bust of Portuguese Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro ordered by the former mayor, Pedro Santana Lopes.
According to daily newspaper Público, the work was supposed to have replaced a semi-abstract sculpture at the roundabout at Areeiro.
But the head of the former Prime Minister, who died in a mysterious air accident when his plane was blown up by a bomb in the early 80s, has been placed beneath the existing sculpture and has been open to public ridicule dubbed the ‘beheaded’ or ‘decapitated’.
