APAA’s Tenth Anniversary Scruffts 2009 was an overwhelming success, with more than 600 adults and many children, not to mention dogs, attending the show in the Fatacil grounds in Lagoa on Sunday.
The show raised 7,000 euros for APAA, the Animal Protection Association of the Algarve, which will go a long way towards helping the work of the Association.
There were many different dog breeds in addition to the rafeiros or mixed bred dogs. One of the vets present said that she was delighted to see a Borzoi as previously she had only seen pictures of them.
The show was opened by the President of Lagoa Câmara, Dr José Inácio Marques Eduardo, who was welcomed by Verna Kinder, the founding President of APAA.
The two judges from the Portuguese Kennel Club chose the Borzoi, Daisy, as Best in Show (Pedigree) and Norm as Best in Show (Mixed Breed).
Daisy is owned by Kerry French, while Lars Rahmquist from VIP Veterinary Clinic in Lagos is the proud owner of Norm.
It was nine-year-old Norm’s first dog show and the trophy is now proudly displayed in the VIP Veterinary Clinic in Lagos.
Norm is a well travelled dog; he was originally from Australia and lived in London before moving to the Algarve.
The Border collie cross initially won first place in the class for Most Appealing Eyes before going through to Best in Show.
The winners of the Dogsbodies pet portrait raffle were Mr and Mrs B. Craigie of Caramujeira.
Dogsbodies donated the proceeds of the raffle to APAA.
There were more than 30 trade stands at Scruffts this year and some of the exhibitors have already asked about booking for next year.
APAA was delighted to welcome a film crew making a documentary about animal welfare and a crew from Algarve Channel 5, who were filming the event.
APAA is indebted to the show’s main sponsor, Paws4Pets of Albufeira, who supplied all the prizes for the judging classes and InfoMyFriend of Lagos who supplied the prizes for the two agility competitions.
