Scrap merchant’s murderer due to go on trial

Court || Lagoa was in shock earlier this year when a 75-year-old scrap-merchant was shot in the head as he sat at his desk.
Three days after the grizzly incident, the man thought to have killed “scrap king” Luís Duarte, was found in a café in Odiáxere. Police had to intervene as local people – including Duarte’s own son – were reported to be attacking the man.
José “Quebra Telha” (Tile-breaker) has been in prison awaiting trial ever since.
Now, according to Correio da Manhã, the case is finally due to come to court.
“Quebra Telha” has always maintained that he did indeed shoot his former friend and employer, but he is understood to have consistently denied the lesser charge of robbery.
Police found the dead man in the same room as an open safe, with at least €10,000 reported to be missing.
According to the prosecution, the motive for the crime is thought to have been robbery.
