Scientists to probe marine sediments to understand past climate change

A group of international scientists have embarked on an expedition off the Portuguese coast to investigate marine sediments and understand through them how climate change occurred thousands of years ago. The expedition is an initiative of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) –  a scientific marine research collaboration that studies the dynamics of the planet by recovering data recorded in sediments and rocks on the seabed. As a statement outlining Expedition 397 explains: “Sometimes to know the future we have to look at the past”.
