Several primary schools with fewer than 21 pupils are expected to close in the Algarve, following restructuring measures announced by the Ministry of Education.
Left-wing party Bloco de Esquerda is now questioning the government about the decision and demands to know which establishments will cease to function.
The political party says the move will lead to more inequalities in the region and the risk of inland councils such as Alcoutim, Monchique and Vila do Bispo suffering a further blow after recent Census 2011 preliminary results showed a decrease in their populations.
A total of 266 primary schools are due to shut across the country.
