SCHOOLCHILDREN WERE invited to take part in the annual Day of the Sea activities at Lisbon’s Monument of the Discoveries last week.
The day’s events included tours around Belém by guides dressed as Vasco da Gama or Henry the Navigator in late 15th century costume. The series of activities were organised and sponsored by Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural (EGEAC), along with the Portuguese National Maritime Museum.
“We decided to run this programme especially for schools, to increase knowledge and understanding among young children of the importance of the Discoverers,” said Pedro Nereu of EGEAC.
The Monument of the Discoveries was re-opened in July last year after extensive restoration and has received, since then, around 60,000 visitors.
