School closures

Portugal’s Ministry of Education is proposing to close around 400 primary schools across the country for the next academic year.

The north of Portugal, particularly hit by the proposal, faces the closure of more than 115 schools while the Alentejo could see at least 87 schools with less than 21 students shutting down.

Minister of Education Isabel Alçada said: ““Some schools that are at risk of closing may continue operating under a special permit if we decide that they have the right conditions.”

The Ministry of Education estimates that nine primary schools will close in the Algarve.
