KATE SCHEIER won the Peter Dawson Bowl recently played at Praia d’El Rey. Scheier scored 34 Stableford points on her home course to win one of the oldest trophies in the Royal British Club Golfing Society schedule.
Sally Buxton came in a close second with 33 points. Ed Robbins, tournament sponsor Bruce Dawson, Axel Beselin and Jimmy Gray followed in positions three through six, scoring in the high 20’s on the challenging course.
A high point in the event was Bill Buxton’s swim in the pond at the 10th hole. Buxton, whose dip so rattled his usual calm demeanor that he won the Cowbell and the lesson with professional Gordon Young, was merely trying to retrieve a ball from the pond when his feet shot out from under him and launched him into the water. A fine athlete, Buxton swam to a drainpipe and hauled himself up to safety while his unknowing playing partners waited on the next tee and a Praia d’El Rey guest prepared to strip down and swim to his aid!
Graciete Gibbon won the Newstead Trophy. Jimmy Gray and Carol Mason won nearest to the pin prizes and Chris Judd won the Captain’s Prize. Visiting from England, Belinda Martin took the guest prize with 33 points, while Georgie Wadey and Steve Moore placed second and third.
The Society’s next event will be the RBC Trophy to be held at Estoril on October 12.
