Scam computer problem phone calls

A warning has been issued by an Algarve computer store after customers said they had received telephone calls from an alleged Microsoft technician requesting their credit card details to fix a problem on their computer.

Algarve Computer Centre in Lagoa told the Algarve Resident this week that phone calls are being made to English speaking residents from a person claiming to work for Microsoft.

“Multiple clients have recently contacted the centre to explain that they had been called, spoken to in English and addressed by their names, before being told that they had a damaging file on their computer,” said Sérgio Fortuna, the technician at the store.

The “Microsoft computer technician” then goes on to offer help to the client that can be instructed over the phone with the work paid for upon submission of credit card details.

Sérgio Fortuna said: “We have checked the computers of clients who have brought them in to be scanned following the phone call and found no damaging files.”

“I do not believe that Microsoft would be calling around Algarve residents offering help to resolve computer problems. People should be aware that this is happening and is quite likely to be a scam,” he added.
