Despite a disappointing season with relegation a real threat, 100 members and guests celebrated the Olhanense club’s birthday at the Marina Hotel, Olhão, last Saturday.
Former Portugal international goalkeeper Ricardo – he will be long remembered by fans for saving shoot-out penalties that eliminated England in Euro 2004 and the World Cup Finals 2006 – received the Player of the Year award. He has been an inspiration to the younger players at the club where his vast experience – he made 77 appearances for his country – has been much appreciated.
There was a big surprise for Irene Bridges who was on holiday and staying with her daughter Christine Wright in Tavira. Irene, President of Springfield Bowls Club in Ealing West London, celebrated her 88th birthday the same day and was bowled over to meet Ricardo and Olhanense president Isidoro Sousa who toasted her good health in champagne.
