Sunday’s Covid bulletin shows that incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection is at 2,444.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – the highest rate ever, thanks to the extreme transmissibility of the Omicron variant that is sweeping through the population, whether vaccinated or not. Today’s bulletin shows another 26,419 cases, with 61 further hospital admissions. Numbers in hospital and intensive care units are still well below established red lines, but the situation is ‘worrying’, given that hospital staff numbers have also been affected by the wave of infections. Absenteeism due to health workers being off sick is a huge obstacle. Deaths over the last 24-hours came to 22, 11 of which were in the Lisbon/ Vale do Tejo region. DGS health authority information never states the ages/ comorbidities of Covid fatalities, but it was recently explained on television that people interned for consequences of the virus are aged from 60 upwards.
