The public is invited to vote for Portimão’s most popular event on the AHRESP website.
Following last year’s award for “Best Summer Gastronomic Event in Europe”, awarded by travel website “Big 7 Travel”, this year, Portimão’s Sardine Festival has been shortlisted for the “Event of the Year” category of the 2023 AHRESP Awards (Hotel, Restaurant and Similars Association of Portugal).
The event, now in its 7th edition, which annually distinguishes the Best of the Year in the Restaurant, Accommodation and Tourism Promotion sectors in Portugal, elected the 2022 edition of the Portimão Sardine Festival as a finalist candidate in the Event of the Year category.
Voting for this category, among others, runs until May 7. Those interested are invited to access the AHRESP website, where they will find the categories and all the candidates among projects, events, services, establishments, training entities, gastronomic revelations, tourist destinations, products, professionals, talents, etc.
The winner in each category is determined based on a weighted average of 50% of the online votes. The votes of the honour committee, made up of renowned figures associated with tourism and the media, will determine the remaining 50%.
The figures for the previous six editions attest to the importance of this AHRESP initiative for the sector, with, to date, 40 awards, 20 honourees and more than 900 competitors in 16 categories, with more than 27,000 voters.
A true hallmark of the Algarve summer, the 26th edition of the Sardine Festival filled Portimão’s riverside area with entertainment between August 3 and 7, breaking all records with 110,000 entries and a daily average of more than 20,000 visitors.
During the five days of the gastronomic contest, and only inside the enclosure, three tons of sardines were consumed.
This year’s edition will take place between August 1 and 6 and is free of admission. The event’s opening will be marked with a recreation of the moment fishermen unloaded sardines onto the docks.
The event will also feature plenty of musical entertainment. The line-up for the main stage includes Carlão (1), Aurea (2), André Sardet (3), Virgul (4), Cuca Roseta (5) and Tony Carreira (6).
