The flames were battled by as many as 258 firefighters
Over 141 firefighters remain at the site of a wildfire which broke out yesterday at around 3.40pm in São Marcos da Serra, Silves and was brought under control at 8.26pm.
The fire started in Barrancos das Veredas, in a valley in the hills near the small village, and forced authorities to cut traffic on the EN267 road and the ‘Linha do Sul’ railway track.
The flames were battled by as many as 258 firefighters, who were able to bring the blaze under control in less than five hours.
In order to ensure there aren’t any flare-ups (or that they are promptly dealt with), the firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the day.
