Renowned Chinese pianist Sa Chen will be performing two concerts on May 28 and 30 at the São Lourenço cultural centre, near Almancil.
During the first, Sa Che will perform Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Sonata Op. 110 and Chopin’s Preludes Op.24. On May 30, her repertoire will include short pieces by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Ravel among others.
Both concerts are scheduled to start at 7.30pm, with wine and canapés being served from 7pm and also during the interval.
Sa Chen began her musical studies at the Sichuan Conservatory and then at the Shenzen School of Arts. She made her first major performance in 1996 when she was 16 and was seen live on BBC TV in the final of the Leeds International Piano Competition with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony. She was offered a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and later studied in Hannover.
Sa Chen has won a number of prizes including first prize at the 1994 China International Piano Competition, followed by top prizes in Leeds and in the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2000, and in the 2005 Van Cliburn, becoming the only pianist in history to have awards in the top three piano competitions.
