São Brás de Alportel Council has announced the cancellation of its hugely popular Easter event Festa das Tochas Floridas (Flower Torch Festival) due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The event celebrates the resurrection of Jesus of Christ by adorning streets with ‘carpets’ of flowers while a procession sees local citizens carrying torches of flowers while chanting religious hymns.
The council asks for everyone’s understanding and says it is preparing “alternative ways that are appropriate given the current situation” for locals to celebrate the Easter season.
