More than 200 people braved the cold sea on Christmas Day to take part in the Swim for Shoes initiative at Armação de Pêra beach.

The swimmers helped to raise more than 775 euros to buy new shoes for children in an Algarve orphanage.

Father Christmas was well represented, with more than 50 attending, who, after singing We wish you a Merry Christmas, ran down to the water.

Certificates were awarded to all those who got wet and everyone enjoyed a glass of mulled wine at the Hotel Garbe bar afterwards.

In order to raise more funds, another Swim for Shoes event, this time with a fancy dress theme, was due to take place on January 1 on the same beach.
