Santarém joins pitching for ‘new airport location’

A group of businesses in the borough of Santarém is reported to be poised to present a study for a new airport in Santarém which could take up to 100 million passengers, and would not require as much in the way of new infrastructure as Alcochete. The beauty of this proposal, explains Expresso in a small story on its back page today, is that funding from the project would come “totally” from the private sector. The region’s mayor has confirmed the plan, which would start with one runway able to take up to 10 million passengers a year, progressing to three, able to accommodate up to 100 million. The whole issue of an overflow airport to take over from Lisbon is back in the public eye with avengeance, but without consensus yet among politicians.
