Santana Lopes pushes for castle traffic restriction plan

LISBON CÂMARA President, Pedro Santana Lopes, is pushing to enlarge the area around the Castelo de São Jorge that is closed to traffic and parking.

Parking and traffic restrictions have already been successfully adopted in several of the city’s historic districts and the new proposed restrictions were up for discussion this week. The proposed system would effectively allow residential and commercial access only and is designed to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, improve the lives of pedestrians and local residents and reduce noise levels. In the past four years, other areas of Lisbon that have benefited from traffic restrictions include Bairro Alto (December 2002), Alfama (August 2003), Bica and Santa Catarina (May 2004).
